THE TIGER'S NEST MONASTERY
Location, location, location...
The Tiger’s Nest Monastry in BhutanThe Taktshang Goemba, also known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastry, is one of the most famous monasteries in Bhutan, a landlocked nation in South Asia.
This Buddhist monastery was built in 1692, on steep cliffs outside of the village Paro, and is situated 2,300 feet above the valley below. Unfortunately the monastery suffered a fire in 1998. Old photographs and diaries were used to recreate the monastery to its original glory.
Unless you are a Buddhist Monk, you will need special permission to visit the monastery. Often, you can get rather close to the monastery, but entering this sacred building is usually out of the question. Climbing to the monastery is on foot or by mule.
